The idea
Wolpe kept the chromatic universe and threw away the row. He said so plainly: "I no longer use them, I only work with a group of five or six pitches at a time." What replaces the row is the constellation, a small unordered collection of three to six pitches with a particular intervallic character, deployed in any register, any rhythm, any dynamic, any articulation. The source course puts his shift in one line: "He did not hear musical space as a path. He heard it as a FIELD" (Lesson 20).
This is closer to how you already write than anything in the last two lessons. A riff cell is an unordered collection. You already move it around the neck. What Wolpe adds is the discipline of tracking what you do to it, and the idea that two constellations can coexist in one piece without either one being the accompaniment.
The second concept here is organic modes, which are not scales. They are modes of behavior. One constellation moves fast and percussively. Another moves slowly and sustains. They occupy the same piece with no hierarchy between them, the way a hawk and a river occupy the same valley.

Playing outside the changes (14:56)
- [01:34] Re-hear the same note as a different scale degree. In C minor, hear C as the third of A♭ major, which uses the same notes, and the color changes.
- [05:02] Tracking outside playing with goal notes: "your goal note first is C, which is the one; then your goal note is C-sharp, which is the four of A-flat sus." A goal note per collection is exactly how you keep a constellation piece from turning into noise.
- [05:58] The four-collection sequence over an unchanging C minor: C minor, A♭ sus, F♯ sus, A♭ minor-major. Four constellations, one bass note, no development between them.
- [09:42] The constraint that makes it work: "you can really go anywhere, but you just need to make the ideas consistent throughout."
- [10:37] The McCoy Tyner device, a question in one key answered in another, and at [12:26] the answer inverted rather than transposed.
Colors and Superimpositions on the Piano (about 70 minutes)
- [03:39] The name for the whole method: "I call it a superimposition. You're superimposing an F major triad over B flat." The triad on top is your constellation. The root underneath is the only thing that makes it a color rather than a chord.
- [15:52] Why the superimposition beats the chord symbol. You could call G over C a C major 9, "but that's very limited." To darken a chord by name you reason through every alteration. To darken it by superimposition you move one triad. That is Wolpe's argument in Greg's vocabulary.
- [17:43] The brightness ladder. Over a fixed C root, move the upper triad up the circle of fifths for brighter (G, D, A, E, B, F♯) and down for darker (F, B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭, G♭). Each step alters one more degree. Then at [21:53] the two directions meet: F♯ and G♭ are the same chord, so brightness and darkness are relative positions rather than absolute qualities.
- [18:43] and [20:51] How to keep it from turning to mud. Voice the left hand 1-5-9 and leave the 3 out, "so you have more space to do superimpositions that will not be too dissonant." E over C is harsh only when the 5 is there to make a ♭9. This is the single most useful thing here for your left hand.
- [24:37] and [25:52] The Petrushka chord, C major plus F♯ major, which Greg reads as three stacked tritones and therefore as the diminished scale. "It has virtually every possibility of resolution built into the chord." Two constellations sounding at once with neither subordinate, which is exactly what Exercise 4 asks you to write.
- [01:00:59] The assignment he writes on camera: one key a day, run all the colors and improvise over each, then repeat holding the same top note throughout "because then it creates melody throughout what you're doing," then repeat again confined to one octave. Take the held-top-note version. It is the constellation discipline this lesson is built on.
Listen
Pass 1, surface. Form IV: Broken Sequences (1969), solo piano, written while Wolpe was seriously ill with Parkinson's disease. Do not try to follow anything. Write down three things you noticed.
Pass 2, structure. Same piece. Listen for the interruptions. The source course describes the "broken sequences" as ideas that begin to develop in one direction and are then cut off and replaced. The interruption is the point. Count them.
Pass 5, relationships. Listen for recurrence. The same collection keeps returning in different registers with different rhythmic profiles. Once you hear one constellation return, you have the method.
Pass 1 again, on the modern side. "Rational Gaze," 0:00 to 0:29. Jonathan Pieslak documents this as four bars of 25/16 and one of 28/16 in the guitars, bass and kick, under a steady quarter-note cymbal pulse. Ignore the rhythm. Listen only to the pitch content and notice how few pitch classes there are.
Sing. Sing the four-note cell C, D♭, E, G. Then sing F♯, A, B♭, D. These are the two contrasting constellations the source course gives in Lesson 20. Sing each in three registers before you play either.
Tap. "Lights Out," 0:00 to 0:42. Calder Hannan shows that the apparent tempo changes are an integer number of eighth notes between cymbal hits over an unchanging pulse, hearable throughout as a dotted quarter at about 144 bpm, the interval shortening by one eighth per subsection. Tap the constant eighth pulse and let the apparent tempo be wrong.
The comparison
The parallel. Wolpe's constellation is a small unordered pitch collection with a fixed intervallic character, deployed freely in register, rhythm and dynamic. A death metal or djent riff cell is a small unordered pitch collection with a fixed intervallic character, deployed freely across the neck. Eric Smialek frames the death metal corpus that way, and the pairing with Forte's set classes and with Wolpe's practice of building from small fixed cells is the same structural claim. Both generate a surface from a small collection transposed and reordered, rather than from a scale with functional degrees.
For Meshuggah the pitch claim is documented and it is small. Pieslak finds pitch to be secondary and consistent across the corpus he studies: a single tonal center framed by the Locrian mode, with chromatic motion around the minor third above the tonic. That is a constellation, a fixed handful of intervals that recur rather than a scale you improvise in.
Where it breaks, precisely, and it breaks in two places. First, Wolpe's cells are subject to deliberate, tracked transformation and to a compositional argument about interval. Death metal's transpositions are largely fret-shape transpositions on the guitar neck, so the invariance is ergonomic before it is intervallic. Somebody's hand found it. Second, Wolpe's constellations coexist without hierarchical subordination, which is the whole content of the organic-modes idea. Meshuggah has a hierarchy and it never leaves. The 4/4 layer is always there, and the riff layer falls in and out of alignment with it but rarely overcomes it. That is a background and a foreground, which is exactly what Wolpe refused.
The third case, and the honest gap. Car Bomb belongs here for the way its material is juxtaposed rather than developed, and Hannan documents the rhythmic side of that in detail. There is no published pitch-cell analysis of Car Bomb. Say so, and transcribe it yourself rather than citing something that does not exist.
The fourth case, where the hierarchy is real and chosen. Tigran Hamasyan works from Armenian modal practice and has written about it himself. In his own byline in Classical Music (3 October 2024) he credits Komitas with "a non-chordal, minimalist polyphonic approach" in which "the voices, each like a chant, form harmonies without external material." Voices forming harmony without external material is close to what Wolpe's organic modes produce, arrived at from a different direction. Scott Schumann's MTO article is the entire peer-reviewed literature on Hamasyan and it is about meter, not modes, so treat the modal claims as Hamasyan's own words rather than as analysis.
At the piano
Take the cell C, D♭, E, G. Play it low and rumbling, two hands, bottom octave. Play it high and piercing. Play it spread across five octaves with one note in each register. Same four pitch classes, four completely different objects.
Now isolate the intervals inside it and give each its own character. The minor second C to D♭ as a hard percussive stab. The major third C to E sustained. The fifth C to G in the left hand as a pedal. The tritone D♭ to G as maximum tension. Wolpe's whole method is in that paragraph.
Then introduce F♯, A, B♭, D with the opposite character. Alternate them. Then interrupt. Let cell one begin a phrase that is clearly going somewhere and cut it off with cell two mid-gesture.
For your left hand, the constellation is a gift. Four notes held as a chord, or two notes as a pedal, is playable this week and is a real compositional statement rather than a placeholder. Use the pedal-plus-cell texture Greg uses at [05:58] in "Playing outside the changes," where the bass never moves and everything happens above it.
Silence gets the same treatment. In Wolpe the silences are events with weight rather than rests. Practice ending a gesture and holding your hands still for four seconds while counting. That is harder than it sounds and it is the most useful thing in this lesson for a composer whose sections currently feel like boxes.
Exercises
1. Explore one constellation completely
Do. Take C, D♭, E, G. Spend twenty minutes on it: different registers, different rhythms (slow and sustained, rapid and percussive, syncopated, metrically free), dynamics from whisper to shout, and each internal interval isolated and given a character. Record all twenty minutes.
Done when: You can play the same four pitch classes in eight distinguishable characters on demand, and you have the recording to prove it.
2. Build the contrasting cell and interrupt
Do. Take F♯, A, B♭, D and give it the opposite character. Alternate. Then interrupt: let one cell start a phrase with a clear direction and cut it off mid-gesture with the other, at least six times in three minutes.
Done when: A listener can hear that a phrase was cut off rather than that it ended, six times out of six.
3. A pitch-constellation riff
Do. Pick your own four- or five-note cell, chosen for its intervals rather than for how it lies under your hand. Write it as a riff in a low register with a metal rhythmic profile. Then write three more versions: one an octave up and sustained, one spread across four octaves, one as a chord. Record all four into Logic as separate tracks.
Done when: Four tracks exist, all four use only your cell's pitch classes, and no two sound like the same instrument doing the same job.
4. Two constellations, two behaviors, one piece
Do. Assign constellation A to a low distorted guitar sound and constellation B to a clean high sound. Give each its own speed of development, its own contour, its own density. Let them run for ninety seconds without either one becoming the accompaniment.
Done when: You can play the two tracks separately and each one is musically complete on its own.
5. Transcribe the Meshuggah cell
Do. Transcribe the pitch content only of "Rational Gaze," 0:00 to 0:29. Ignore rhythm entirely. Write down the pitch classes as an unordered set and find the set class.
Done when: You have the set on paper, and you can say whether Pieslak's description of a Locrian frame with chromatic motion around the minor third fits what you found.
6. Greg's outside sequence as constellation practice
Do. Over an unchanging C minor pedal in the left hand, run the sequence C minor, A♭ sus, F♯ sus, A♭ minor-major in your thinking, naming a goal note for each before you play it. Then do it again with each collection given a different rhythmic character.
Done when: You can state each goal note's function in its borrowed collection and a listener can hear the four changes without the bass moving.
Compose
Write a two-minute piece built from exactly two constellations, using juxtaposition rather than development. No transitions. When one section ends, the next replaces it. Each moment must be independently valid, which the source course calls "the ever-restored and ever-advancing moment."
Constraints: two constellations of four or five pitches each, at least four juxtapositions, at least two silences of two seconds or longer treated as events rather than rests, and one section where both constellations run simultaneously with neither subordinate. Instrumentation is yours. Record it and notate it in Sibelius.
Then answer one hard question in a paragraph. Does the piece hold together, and if so, what is holding it? Wolpe's answer is the quality and intensity of each moment. If yours does not hold, say what would fix it, and do not fix it with a transition.
